This week our featured Bellingham neighborhood is Sunnyland! Sunnyland is one of the core neighborhoods that surround downtown Bellingham. Sunnyland is one of the top locations for walkability to amenities. Located just west of I-5, and bordering the northwest edges of downtown, the southern third of the neighborhood is primarily industrial with one major highlight being the newer restaurant and brewery Twin Sisters).
The northern two third sections of the neighborhood include just over 2,200 single-family homes, with mixed-use. James street is walkable from anywhere in Sunnyland, with the anchor business being Trader Joe’s. But you can also find a fruit and vegetable stand, Coconut Kenny’s Pizza and many other local businesses and restaurants.
Sunnyland is primarily older character homes with a high rate of owner occupancy and excellent pride of ownership displayed consistently. For these reasons and more, Sunnyland has shown some of the highest rates of home appreciation in Bellingham in recent years.

Best Features of Sunnyland:

-Trader Joe’s and many restaurants and breweries within walking distance.

-Long walk/short bike ride to downtown.

-Central location to hospital/medical.

-Generally good pride of ownership.

-Sidewalks, tree-lined streets and a variety of character homes.

Negatives or possible trade-offs:

-City lots (average 5,000 sq. ft.) means no large lots.

-Elementary school is desirable, but not rated as highly as nearby Lowell and Columbia elementary.

-Very few newer/more modern homes for those looking for newer homes.
