Birchwood neighborhood overview

Birchwood neighborhood is located on the northwestern edge of Bellingham and combines city life with a country feel. Bordering the Columbia neighborhood, a section of Birchwood is walking distance to the Fountain district, or to Squalicum Creek Park. And from throughout Birchwood, you are a short drive to I-5 and an easy bike ride to downtown.

Birchwood is best known for its narrow streets and large lots. Most of these lots are skinny and deep. Affording you a really good-sized backyard. Other lots are 1/3 to a 1/2 acre, really giving you more space than you can find in most other neighborhoods in Bellingham.

The neighborhood is home to Bellingham Golf and Country Club, Bellingham Technical College, and the Squalicum Creek Park, which is a 36-acre park that really has it all. Including sports fields, a playground, an off-leash dog park, and trails that lead to nearby Cornwall Park as well.

This is a neighborhood of primarily older and mid-century single-family homes as you get closer to downtown, and the other half of the neighborhood (northeastern section) you find a fair amount of apartment complexes and three different condominium complexes (Redwood Avenue and two condo complexes on Northwest Avenue).

Positives

Great bang for the buck compared to nearby core neighborhoods (like Sunnyland, Cornwall Park, and Columbia neighborhood) where you can get a home with a bigger lot for a similar price.
More of a rural feel with the larger lots. And close proximity to schools, parks, downtown, Fountain district, and quick I-5 access for commuters.

Things to consider

Noise can be a factor. The west part of Birchwood gets some aircraft traffic noise from the nearby Bellingham airport. The very northern section has some busier roads and then gets close to the I-5 freeway itself on the very Northeastern edge of the neighborhood.
