History of Cornwall Park

To understand the history of Cornwall Park, it’s important to understand where the name came from. Cornwall Park neighborhood is aptly named after the 70-acre Cornwall Memorial Park that is at the center of the neighborhood.

The park was named in honor of Pierre Barlow Cornwall in 1909 by his children Bruce Cornwall and Bertha James Cornwall Fisher. The children donated 65 acres of land to the city. Pierre Barlow Cornwall was a businessman and philanthropist originally from New York. He made the long trek to California in 1848 and began to open businesses along the west coast, including Bellingham.

In 1980, the city adopted its neighborhood plan, which included plans for all neighborhoods in Bellingham including the establishment of Cornwall Park. The plans embraced the concept of “open space.”

Cornwall Park Neighborhood residents are richly blessed with opportunities to enjoy

parks and open space thoughtfully provided by previous generations. We commonly

equate open space and parks with recreational use. There is a larger concept of open

space, however, that encompasses scenic views, a wooded backdrop or a “frame” for

an area containing wild plant and animal life. It is this broader definition of open

space, which is a valued asset of the Cornwall Park Neighborhood.

With the maintenance and preservation of parks, Squalicum Creek, and wetlands, this same concept for the neighborhood continues to be embraced to this day.
